The term "universal design" as it applies to remodeling your home, refers to design that is aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent by everyone, regardless of their age or ability. It was coined by the architect Ronald L. Mace, and was the work of Selwyn Goldsmith, who pioneered the concept of free access for disabled people in the early 1960's.

At JVA Construction Services, turning your House into a Home for all can mean adding many features to your home, including:

  • Smooth, ground level entrances without stairs

  • Surfaces that are stable, firm and slip resistant

  • Wide interior doors, hallways, and alcoves with 60" by 60" turning space at doors and dead ends

  • Lever handles for opening doors rather than twisting knobs

  • Light switches with large flat panels rather than small toggle switches

  • Bright and appropriate lighting, particulary task lighting

  • Ramp access to your home or outdoor living spaces

At JVA Construction Services, in addition to being a design/build company, we are a Certified Aging-in-Place contractor, (CAPS). Be sure to ask us about Universal Design as you begin research for a home or room remodel project!
